Each airline has it's own policy on what to use to mark the luggage.It also various airport to airport with each jurisdiction.Call and ask.(Both directions) You may get it there and not allowed to bring it back. Carry your badge& id with you at all times.
Some places use colored tag's for id.In places like NY,LA the baggage handlers steal the guns.
I would get a travelers insurance policy for the cost of the weapon your transporting(both ways)
Hunters often do. (Even if it's the department issued sidearm)
The standard airline insurance does not cover firearms loss.(Or losing a deceased persons body) - Thank You

...let's open up the pandora's box of THEFT. REALLY?! Do some of these baggage handlers have the nerve to steal guns? I'm sure someone can track the payroll to see who was working when.
I'm wondering if it's easier to just FedEx or UPS it...I don't know if I like the idea of someone stealing my (non-department) gun. - Re: Thank You

The baggage handlers steal everything they can slip their hands on. My last trip to Arizona they broke my zipper and rummaged through entire contents of suitcase.
YES, the baggage handlers have as many thieves as any other service organization.

The in the know poster does have up to date info but on that airline.
Again I point out your traveling through multiple venues,assorted agencies,airports and police jurisdictions.(Our own airport is a classic case in point.In the county,Airport coppers are a separate city agency deputized under county police. The airlines and TSA also have authority. If the flight is delayed you sit where? Sometimes the luggage is boarded on a different flight to same destination actually arrives ahead of you. Where does it sit waiting for you?)
I have been there done that it sucked.Write the report on the lost weapon.File it with the correct LEO agency. Have them forward a copy to your Lt. Oh wait this happened in Denver on a connecting flight,you find out in LA. On a lost firearm everyone wants to see you in person.Forget your trip.
I say do what you want. But I UPS ship the weapon to my self at destination reverse when I go home. By law UPS is only shipper to send guns and ammo .They individually track the package from point to point and insure it. You must show ID(badge) at UPS office. I have never had a problem.
Always plan ahead,always plan for top three possible screw ups to occur.(Nothing will happen,but when you don't plan it all goes to the toilet with no paper)
BTW who says the "unarmed/no weapons trained" TSA people(no offence) know anything about firearm safety?

Arizona and its people will welcome you with open arms.You will be treated well given he red carpet treatment.It is a open carry state expect to see citizens tote all types of firearms exposed and loaded.
New Jersey will treat you like a Mongol on the loose from the hoards(The Mel brooks one as well as the Asian variety). I advise to ship the weapon to yourself at destination. Make them sign for it and insure it. Don't go anywhere without your badge and ID.
BTW all hollow-point ammo is banned in NY,NJ even for law enforcement.(Unless you are traveling through on official business with a warrant) It's mere possession is a felony. - Re: Flying-caution

I flew into Newark, NJ this past August and had no problem . They didn't use any colored tags, which was my biggest fear. I declared the weapon in my suitcase and identified myself as a LEO. They observed the weapon locked in a container, gave me a card to put into the container and then had an airline rep walk me to the security area where I signed a book. Picked up my locked luggage in St. Louis after the flight and found all was well.
I'd still get the insurance but they don't label your luggage with your weapon in it. - Re: Flying-caution

on 11/4/2009, 8:41 pm, in reply to "Flying"Make sure your weapon is in a hard sided case, like the new one in which the gun is packaged/sold, and make sure you have the TSA designated lock type-typically a slimline combination with tempered wires-though it may have changed since I carried. Most luggage stores and gun shops are current on the required TSA lock. Just make sure it fits your gun case because they are not one size fits all as I discovered the hard way.
If you are traveling somewhere you have friends borrow a gun if they have one, it reduces the opportunity for theft and hassles when checking baggage. If you are going on assignment or a very long trip, many of my friends ship their weapon via FedEx or UPS. Seems to work for them.

I'll give you a brief tutorial on flying with a gun as I have done so in the past many times.

PRINT both and bring with you.
Your firearm MUST be in a lockable (think hard sided) case.
Your ammunition must be in an enclosed container. The factory box, i.e., the box your ammo came in, from the Academy, with a rubber band around it, has sufficed for me every time. A magazine will not be acceptable.
Your firearm cannot be loaded.
That lock on your firearm case CANNOT AND SHOULD NOT HAVE A TSA ACCESSIBLE LOCK ON IT. It should be locked with a keyed padlock. The suitcase containing your gun should have a TSA accessible lock on it.
When you check your baggage, the agent should inspect your firearm at the counter to ensure it's unloaded. You should have to fill out an orange firearms card which GOES INSIDE YOUR CHECKED BAG- not on the inside of the gun case or the outside of your luggage. TSA and most airline's policy prohibit any outward indication that the luggage contains a firearm.
If there is a problem with the ticket agent, simply, and politely, produce your previously printed copies of both that particular airline's and TSA policies on checking a firearm.
After you are finished with checking your bag, the ticket agent will contact a TSA agent, or direct your bag to be conveyed to the TSA baggage inspection people. You are generally directed to be present when your bag in x-rayed by the TSA. In my experience the TSA people give you a thumbs-up when you are good-to-go.
