Well for me, the interest in WW2 began in the 5th grade when a good friend of mine invited me over to look at WW2 model tanks he and his brother built. As my interest grew, I began watching TV shows like Combat and going to the movies to see different war movies. Of course to that point I didn't even know there was such a thing as the Eastern Front until my mom bought me a book about WW2. It described the invasion of Russia, with all the success of the German Army initially, then struggling with the weather and the mud. I found it fascinating. Then I stumbled on the book "Enemy at the Gates" by William Craig. I must have read that book 10 times. The came the TV series "World at War" with the invasion of Russia and the Stalingrad episode my favorite. The battle of Salingrad captured my imagination, and the more I read, or documentaries I see about it fascinate me. I think the ferocity of the battle and how brave the soldiers were on both sides, how the 6th Army went to their doom still believing in their leaders empty promises. The battles that took place on the Eastern front were, in my opinion, the most terrible of the war, yet the ones that captured my imagination.
