I believe the Germans were sucker punched and outwitted by the Russians. The Russians also choice winter time for this operation. They knew their country in winter and they also knew how over confident the Germans had become and thus were making big mistakes. The Germans had made the one big mistake that even Caesar avoided. Never, ever take your enemy for granted. The sixth army only hope was to withdraw from the situation in December. They did not, and their fate was sealed from that moment on. The Russian armies were well armed and well fed with cans of spam coming to them from the American west.
