I was part of a GROUP that included some older kids and a DESIGNATED ADULT who knew the terrain, how to build a campfire, even how to KILL a snake and cook and EAT IT to survive if he had to.
We called him Mr. Williams, and he was invaluable, because most of us didn't even know how to set up a TENT correctly !!
I still recall struggling with my life jacket before going out on the lake to fish - I had the vest on completely BACKWARDS, and then I proceeded to SNAG Mr. Williams' best fishing rod on a tree limb that was partially submerged in the lake !!
Kids at that age still have MUCH to learn about the wilderness. I know I surely did.
