Further to this posting, the Bentworth parish register shows David Elias Spiers was indeed the illegitimate son of Ann Maria Spiers. I believe the strange registration of a David Elias McCan in the civil registrations in Alton was an attempt to cover up the illegitimacy. Ann Maria Spiers was herself baptised 1816, the eldest daughter of Charles Spiers who married Charlotte Bricknell, and hence can be added to the tree held on this website. Ann Maria Spiers married a George Pointer and they had other children.
David Elias Spiers married Ellen Matilda Stevens, having two children, Ernest and Susie (sic) Ann Spiers. They ended up in Ash and Frimley, Surrey. So the Spiers name was carried on through the distaff side!

: I have some information regarding
: David Elias Spiers, born 1840 in
: Bentworth, Hampshire, England. I
: believe his family links in to the
: family of Charles and Charlotte
: Spiers married 1815 East Tisted. My
: suspicion is he was the illegitimate
: son of Ann(a)/Anne Marie/Maria
: Spiers, who I believe was the eldest
: daughter of Charles and Charlotte
: Spiers, born around 1816 between
: their marriage in 1815 and their
: previously first known child Sophia
: who was born in 1821. David Spiers
: was living with Charles and
: Charlotte in the 1841 census aged 1,
: I believe as a grandchild not a
: child as might be suspected from the
: census returns. David moved to his
: mother's new husband when Ann Marie
: married George Pointer in 1844, as
: he is shown in the 1851 census with
: them but with his own surname.
: I will post further details to the
: site maintainers so this can all be
: added properly.
