I really love the same book as Rachel. I too suffered from sleep issues even though I had the book from the start. I just let my emotions get in the way of rational thinking.
Definitely follow the 2 hour rule... Don't let your babies be up for more than 2 hours at this stage. When it's getting close to the 2 hour mark or even if you notice that they start acting cranky before that, start doing more soothing activities.
Here's another trick that helped.. think of EASY:
E=Eat
A=Activity
S=Sleep
Y=Your time while they sleep.
The principles of Happiest Baby on The Block were very useful for me. They are the 5 S's:
1 Swaddle--don't underestimate the power of a good swaddle.
2 Side lying. Only when you're holding them to calm them down before sleep.
3 Swinging or gently jiggling. After they're really relaxed let them sit in the swing or bouncy seat and let them nap there if that's the only way to get some sleep.
4 Sucking. Binki, bottle, or breast.
5 Shushing or loud white noise--it reminds them of the sounds in the womb.
Finally if you need to separate them. We had to have one in a co-sleeper in our room and the other in the crib in their room for a while until they got into better sleep habits. You could also use a swing or bouncy seat to separate them.
Good luck!! My boys started getting better at sleeping when I was able to separate them for a while. Then they got used to sleeping more and we put them back together. Sleep was up and down until last year (they're almost 3 now), so I know how frustrating it is. Just wait until potty training--it's almost as fun!
