For a while, I only had my family room child-proofed. I put up a gate and kept that the twins in that room most of the time. That got old, so here's what I've found useful:
1. Put anything breakable or dangerous out of reach. I've put some things into storage that I'll pull out again later when it's more safe (if that ever happens).
2. Outlet covers.
3. If you have an outlet that is always in use but not hidden there are covers you can buy that cover an outlet in use.
4. Re-arrage furniture to cover cords. We even resorted to duct-taping exposed cords to the wall. You can get white duct tape. You'll need to touch up the paint afterwards, but to me it was worth it. You can also buy cord covers.
5. Gates. Having a gate was so useful. We have one that uses pressure to stay in place, but can also be mounted to the wall if you want.
6. Locking cupboards. We have put latches on all the cupboards we don't want the twins to get into. A package only costs $2-3.
7. Putting small sets of toys in different parts of the house, so that the kiddos will be more entertained and less likely to try to get into things.
I've tended to come up with ideas for child-proofing as the need arises. My boys recently figured door knobs out, so we got covers for those. I'm just know trying to figure out what to do about them opening the sliding glass doors, but I've got a few ideas.
It may seem annoying to have to rearrage the whole house, but let me tell you how much nicer it is to feel like they can roam a little more freely rather than me always having to be right next to them. I even resorted to taking my gate with me once or twice so I wouldn't have to worry at other people's homes.
I hope this was useful.
