I use to live in San Diego (SD) and I am going back to visit on July 20. We are staying at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina. I'll let you know what it is like when I return. Meanwhile, what is your budget for a SD Hotel stay? What area are you interested in staying? Have you checked the reviews on Tripadvisor.com?
