That was a hard stage for me too. Even though they don't have many teeth, they probably could gum some softer foods like cheese (check if that's ok at this age, I can't remember), cheerios (which are good for eye-hand coordination), arrow-root cookies, etc. Also, whole milk yogurt is always a big hit. One other thing I remember my boys liking soup which I thickened with some baby cereal for easier feeding. I think you can pretty much start feeding 9-10 month olds whatever you eat (with a few exceptions for allergy concerns) as long as you wait 3-5 days between new foods and make it soft enough. A good book is "A Nursing Mother's Companion" which goes over in detail starting solid foods. Good luck.
