Posted by Tiffiny My experiences were when Gabe was 6 months old and when both were 10 months old. The hardest thing for them was being away from their comfort zone. They have actually been hospitalized additionally for illness and it seems like they just missed being able to play on the floor and have their own beds to sleep in. I brought their own blankets and a few of their own toys. I don't think I'd bring toys again unless they really cling to a specific toy. The hospital has a "life services" program where they will provide toys, music, mobiles, movies, etc. Just think about what you do with them at home and try to keep to their routines even though they aren't at home. If you need anything, ask...they may be able to provide it or allow you to bring it from home if they'll be there a while. Our longest stay was 5 days (after the NICU of 5 months). If you are involved in early intervention, call and ask your coordinator if she can get you in touch with someone who has gone through the surgery...or ask the surgeon. I would think that with cleft palate there would be people who would be willing to offer you their support. I also seem to remember that there is a cleft palate support group...they may have an online chat...for sure they could affer you suggestions about going through the surgery. Good luck! I know it's scary, but these kids are resilient...they'll make it through!

My sons' have both had surgery, one has had two of them. They are almost 15 months old.
I don't know if there is a way to "prepare" a child as young as that for it. They don't have a good concept of time yet, so it's more a matter of getting yourself prepared. It really will likely be harder on you in the long run. If you are stressed ahead of time it will be apparent to them. If your surgery is at Primary's they offer a pre-surgery program that you'll get a postcard in the mail for registering. I never did it, but I think it would be good if your child seems apprehensive.
