Did you vet examine the heifer?? If not shame on him. Her prognosis depends on two things - the extent of the damage to the nerves and how quickly whe is treated. As Jen says the longer she is down the worse things are for her. Calving paralysis is (or should be) considered a medical emergency - does she appear paralyzed in one or both back legs? Does she nmove them both? Does she try to stand? Is she alert or are her eyes vacant and her ears down? Is she dehydrated (pull up on her eyelid - does it take a while to got back down to normal or does it bounce back down?
IMHO your vet needs to hussle his buns over to look at the heifer and give you a realistic idea of her prognosis (ie whether he thinks she will get better or not) - he also needs to examine her and treat her for whatever else ails her.....meantime she needs nutrition - you can hand feed her (ie take some purina senior (horse food) or a softer grain mix kinda soak in in water and put it in her mouth - if she chews and swallows - great - if not it is a bad sign. Will she drink? If not get a syringe (big) or turkey baster (sorry Mom) or something like that and squirt water into the corner of her mouth - if she swallows great - if not it is a bad sign. Your vet should be able to tube her with a variety of nutrients and water - call him asap...good luck, dl
