Sounds like my dad and I 30 years ago. I'd give quite a bit to be able to have the same discussion with him today. My best suggestion regarding the AI/Natural service question would be to try it on only a few cows at first, assuming it can be done with some convenience. You could approach it from the standpoint that you can find out once an for all if the bulls in the catalog are really better than yours or that you might be able to raise a real good herd bull for less than it might cost to buy him. By only trying a few with AI, you might meet less resistance. Emphasize the potential positive results. Be prepared either way. The calves may not be any better than the ones you already have and they might be the best you ever raised. Regardless, I don't think you'll want to totally rule out either option. As far as the purebred or crossbred bull question, it will depend on the desired end result. Do you want to get into the seedstock business? Do you want to raise commercial cattle? Do you want to produce club calves? You can do a little of each with not too much extra effort. Raise what you like and hopefully make a little profit while you're doing it. --Previous Message-- : I LIVE IN OHIO AND MY FAMILY HAS TWO FARMS.
