At this time in the game ( I mean that if you are going to JACKPOST he must be 800-900 lb) and it is mostly genetics.
What I would do is encourage your son to do his best this year and try to get him fat for the fair so you can get a BLUE RIBBON and sell him.
Then next year find a steer that has all what you are looking for that is SOUND, at a young age and most of the time, that type of steer will grow up bigger and fatter and the same PROPORIANATE
Start looking a picture of NICE steers Like at SHOWCHAMPIONS.COM and you will see what the good ones look like.
