I'd say that those family's like the Mays that win consistently don't leave anything to chance. In other words no one really knows because all the bases were obviously covered and the credit definitely goes to the total program. So if I was a betting man I'd say a little of both. Although I would say since we've used melatonin products at recommended levels it sure has covered up some management mistakes and probably its biggest attribute is we can get hair when we need it not when the calf naturally grows it. It also seems to give more length and quality no matter the genetics. This has been backed up by studies on other species and yak. There is no scientific studies on cattle that I know of but it does seem that the families that win consistently seem to think melatonin works.

: So was it the Grow and Shine that gave your
: calf such great hair or the genetics and
: hard work?

: I am pretty sure with the Bob May Family
: that
: the genetics were not overlooked.

: I have a steer at home that has never been
: implanted or given grow and shine and he too
: has three to four inches of leg hair without
: a cooler and comming straight off the cow.
: Genetics is always overlooked.

: When ingested, absorption is 30% to 60%.
: Even
: at 30% you get more melatonin in the system
: in 3 days with ingested melatonin than with
: implants over the 3 week suggested
: period----provided the implants were handled
: properly, implanted correctly and are the
: largest on the market. You know your calf is
: getting the melatonin when you personally
: give it to him daily. The Grand Steer at
: Kansas City was fed Grow and Shine and had
: 3-4 inch leg hair.

: Isn't there a problem with the melatonin
: absorption when feed as oppossed to
: dissolving into the blood or tissue of the
: animal?

: Implants------- 90 day supply $225-
: melatonin
: administered 225 milligrams.
: Grow and Shine- 90 day supply $180-
: melatonin administered 9600 milligrams. And
: you still have 3200 milligrams (1 bottle)
: left over.
:
: I admit we didn't have but 18 milligram
: implants when we used them but it is easy to
: see why it didn't work over half the time
: when you see the amount difference in
: melatonin administered.

: 25 mg for $25 a piece. We have seen best
: results if 9 are used per animal. Put in
: fatty tissue - 3 implants 3 months from
: show, 3 20 days later and the final 3 20
: days after that.

: Implants were inconsistent for us. Our guys
: tell us that its because it is not enough
: melatonin for a large animal. The implants
: are made for goats and sheep. No one can
: ever seem to get them from a consistent
: source so we always questioned the way they
: were handled as well. One jock even pulled
: them out of his pocket to sell them to us.
: Implants are made for small animals and are
: expensive per milligram sometimes costing
: over a dollar per milligram. Wallmart sells
: melatonin for pennys per milligram and grow
: and shine sells it for less. Our guys say
: 100 miligrams per day for a larger animal so
: you can see its nearly impossible to get
: enough melatonin from an implant.

: Does anyone know where I can get some
: melatonin implants? My vet I usually get
: them from said they are getting hard to come
: by and couldnt get any. Thanks for any
: help!!
