Don't know anything about that particular breeder, or about showing steers in California, but if they break by breeds (where your Hereford shows against only other Herefords in class) then a Hereford could be a really good place to start - they usually have very good tempraments and are pretty easy to feed. If they have to show against all breeds in class, then yeah, it can be pretty tough to compete against the blacks with a pb Hereford. There are some that can, but they'll be hard to find and maybe pretty pricey if you do.
