Be careful with the clipping. Anything shorter than 1/2" and you may get docked. Packing plants need that hair for skinning. That's what our judges told us.

: So my nine year old daughter needed an
: easier
: animal to take to the little county Kansas
: fair and we agreed she could take pigs. (To
: our great disappointment)
:
: Having been to Aksarban and other top notch
: hog shows we realize that the big players
: are all clipping their hogs.
:
: I have the appropriate guard for the job,
: etc. but now the question become to clip or
: not to clip.
:
: Everyone I've talked to who has shown hogs
: here before says hardly a one comes to the
: fair clipped.
:
: Do we clip and start a trend or do we follow
: the good ole boys and not rock the boat?
: What will the judge expect? Will it improve
: her chances or will she look like she's
: trying too hard?
:
: I ask here since we are cattle ranchers and
: not on the pig circuit.
:
: If it were a steer show and no one came
: buffed and puffed I would still be inclined
: to grow hair and fancy up the animal as a
: matter of personal pride and the pleasure of
: making a stinky animal smell like it just
: came from the beauty salon.
:
: I need the thoughts of the wisest on this
: board and thank you in advance.
