It is most likely sub-clinical mastitis. Blood in small amounts (pink milk)is sometimes normal when the udder swells before freshening. This does cause small vessels to rupture at times, but it would be rare to have all quarters bloody. It can also be caused by some trauma to the udder. Since the calf has been pulled and the heifer will be dryed off, I would treat all quarters with a good, DRY COW, udder infusion. The over the counter meds are not very strong, I would ask my vet for something like Pirsue or SpectraMast, again, use the dry cow formula. Good luck,

: Our neighbor had a first calf heifer calve
: this evening with light assistance. She
: wanted nothing to do with her calf, so in
: the process of trying to get the calfsome
: colostrum, found that the cow had only dark
: brownish blood, no milk in any quarter. We
: grafted the calf onto another cow that had
: lost a calf yesterday, she really wanted the
: calf. Question is what would cause the
: heifer to have the blood in her udder? Does
: this often happen, but if the calf nurses,
: we never know? Couldn't be good for the
: calf, could it? Is it safe to slaughter the
: heifer, or would this be a problem that
: would hurt the meat, or should be treated
: and cleared up bfore eventual slaughter?
: Thanks for your thoughts.
