It is wise to check with your vet, but when this happens we were told it is usually short term. Sometimes blood vessels break thus causing bleeding into the udder. Alot of blood is not good for the calf, it is stomach irritant. We were told to milk the cow out, (don't feed the milk to the calf). It seems to me if I remember right that we have done it a couple times and then the milk cleared up and all was good. I don't ever remember it being a repeat occurance though, as we still have those couple of cows that it happened to. Mother nature always has a way of weeding out those problem cows it seems. I would still check with the vet, but as long as you have not administered any drugs, I wouldn't think there would be any harm in butchering her.
