Mastitis is probably the problem. Call the vet to treat.
: Our neighbor had a first calf heifer calve
: this evening with light assistance. She
: wanted nothing to do with her calf, so in
: the process of trying to get the calfsome
: colostrum, found that the cow had only dark
: brownish blood, no milk in any quarter. We
: grafted the calf onto another cow that had
: lost a calf yesterday, she really wanted the
: calf. Question is what would cause the
: heifer to have the blood in her udder? Does
: this often happen, but if the calf nurses,
: we never know? Couldn't be good for the
: calf, could it? Is it safe to slaughter the
: heifer, or would this be a problem that
: would hurt the meat, or should be treated
: and cleared up bfore eventual slaughter?
: Thanks for your thoughts.
