Our neighbor had a first calf heifer calve this evening with light assistance. She wanted nothing to do with her calf, so in the process of trying to get the calfsome colostrum, found that the cow had only dark brownish blood, no milk in any quarter. We grafted the calf onto another cow that had lost a calf yesterday, she really wanted the calf. Question is what would cause the heifer to have the blood in her udder? Does this often happen, but if the calf nurses, we never know? Couldn't be good for the calf, could it? Is it safe to slaughter the heifer, or would this be a problem that would hurt the meat, or should be treated and cleared up bfore eventual slaughter? Thanks for your thoughts.
