Posted by Felix on 2/27/2003, 9:10 pm, in reply to "My further comments" Shirley started out singing karaoke-style songs too but at the time karaoke was relatively a new thing and it was still developing. And since 'The Story of Shirley', Shirley has always pushed the envelope with the sound of each new release, her audience is different from that of Sammi Cheng, whose music direction is the easy-to-digest karaoke style. I think there a are lot of talented artists out there, but none of them seems to have enough 'flare' or support to gain a substantial market share. The 'yun hei' factor is really important and this year I see Jade Kwan stepping up but it still depends on the music. Candy Lo did really well with one song last year, but I think her fate will be similar to that of Shirley because of her music direction. She will always have a good following and stable sales, but may not rise to top on the popular scale.

I think Shirley might win the most popular singer award in 96 on certain award shows if she continued to sing in 96. It think after "Ex" and '95's live concert, people has accepted Shirley more and even though 'ezone (the proper follow-up to "Ex") was not an album of karaoke song, people will accept it as a trend-setting album if it had gotten proper promotion. At the end of the day it's just diappointing because 'ezone could've been a landmark album in HK's music history (which I still think it is despite Polygram's cruel treatment of it).
