Posted by Anon on 10/26/2002, 12:42 pm BUT, you could never make any final conclusion until you hear a new song from her. There is still no output (a cantonese song) since 1996. It is a big mistake not to include 1-2 Cantonese songs in FF. I really don't know what SHirley wants in her life and in her music. She needs to move further to the output stage very soon, or I am afraid she will end up retiring sadly like Priscilla and Amanda. Shirley is clearly self-destructing her own career at the moment.

(1) Sometimes you need to accept fate is affecting Shirley (let me explain first, Miss C.U. before you talk about WWI, etc, etc). Her second contract with Polygram was too short (only 3 years, from 93 to 96). Had the contract been longer (her first contract lasted 5 years, from 89 to 93), at least she would be "forced" to sing until 96-97. She should have achieved much more in 96-97 (especially in the Mandarin market, too bad she was still a junior newcomer before she stopped after "confused" in 1995). She could easily establish a stronger status if she only left in 1997, then I could say "FF" could easily reach 1 platinum both in HK and Taiwan. She was not even HALF of Sandy Lam (in terms of sales figure and consolidation in the fans' hearts. No hatred against Shirley) when she stopped in early 1996.
(2) With more sak-lik singers like Jade Kwan this year, I am so afraid Shirley's all-round style will be replaced by the "sum" of Jade + Candy + Denise + Joey very soon. Shirley clearly knows that people do not need to wait for her or remember her, but she must give us some output please.
(3) I really hope nothing sad happened between BMG and Shirley from June. Even if things are good with BMG, in the long term, things are REALLY BAD. I can't see any other company willing to sign an "old" 36-year-old female, who is already forgotten by many people. And her 'music is art, not commerce' attitude is a big barrier in such a commercial and realistic city like HK. I could only see Stareast willing to sign Shirley.
(4) Shirley does not have the financial power to establish her own production team like Anthony Wong. Anthony has many musicians to back him up and they all share the production cost and profit, while SHirley is a lonely fighter.
(5) I know C.U. will say she must fight and have the talent recognized, but reality is always a different story. A lot of "first-line" singers are always forced to sing some songs they do not want to sing, but we all know Shirley is too strong to compromise...deep down inside she knows what she wants to do, but from a realistic point of view, the record company, media, fans, general public will only regard her innovative music as a weird thing, and that always frustrate Shirley. She might end up accepting defeat to the real world.
(6) BMG (the reporters called it WEA) claimed that the promotion contract clearly stated that Shirley will only do promotion for FF in Taiwan. But we really don't know what is happening between Shirley and BMG. I really hope BMG do not have the "let the contract expires, give up on Shirley la.." attitude now. But Shirley seemed optimistic and had the "mak kai" with BMG during her FF interview in....December 2001....and Ward is right, things change quickly.
(6) It seems that the "Shirley is chong che, sitting in the coffee bar" thing has "cooled down". Has she finished the composing stage, and all the songs are now sent to the "lyrics writing and music arrangement" stage?
(7) Are we all brainwashed by the HMV shart? If FF reached No.1 in December, then may be we are all getting relaxed at the moment and might think BMG treats Shirley very well...
(8) I really hope Shirley will relax and clearly think about her whole career, what she wants to do, and how she wants to spend her life. Even an OL has to work 9-5 five days a week. If Shirley has signed to be an employee under BMG, I really hope Shirley will expect to do some "Decent" promotion (e.g. singing for charity events, doing more music-related promotion).
(9) You have to say that she might be really get frightened by the mass media in HK. She lacks the communication skills. Imagine you have to face 50 reporters and answer all the questions on her life since 1996, you might also end up panicking and cry. Her personality clearly does not suit the "game" these days. If she wanted to act like Miriam, she would have done that ages ago.
(10) She is not god. She is just a human being. If the records company say "no", if no one wants to be her manager, if her music is really not recognized, then her only option is to spend her whole life sitting at home...it is sad, but her situation is really not promising.
