There are usually TONS of folks on the two major trail routes between South Fork and the summit. I wouldn't hesitate to go whether as a dayhiker or overnighter.
High probability of thunderstorms this weekend, so take some form of raingear, watch the sky, and be prepared to turn back if it looks like things are getting dark and nasty up high. FWIW: I still go if t-storms are predicted, I just turn around if the weather deteriorates to the point it doesn't look safe.
