Thanks Man. I feel better about the bears.
But I will keep my bearspray around anyway... in case of mountain lions... AND UNRULY HIKERS!
I saw some young adult hikers one day carrying large backpacks... and shovels into the wilderness.
Not sure what was going on there... but I didn't trust em one bit.

: I carry some too but it's for mountain
: lions. There has only been one bear
: incident in the local mountains in
: the past 42 years:
:
: San Bernardino County, August 1993 –
: Two separate incidents occurred
: within three days of each other. In
: both cases, the bear — or bears —
: grabbed a child by the head and
: attempted to drag him away. In each
: incident, both victims were
: 13-year-old males and were sleeping
: on the ground in sleeping bags at
: the time of the attack. The bear
: also inflicted minor injuries on
: three other campers immediately
: prior to the attacks. The attacks
: occurred at two group campgrounds
: approximately two miles from each
: other and the attacks ended when
: other campers aggressively came to
: the victims’ aid. More than 100
: people were sleeping on the ground
: in the immediate area at the time of
: the each attack. Both campgrounds
: were either clean or moderately
: clean. However, the area is
: interspersed with cabins and garbage
: is available nearby. Natural foods
: were available and abundant at the
: time of the attacks.
:
: Within two hours of the second
: incident, two bears were tracked
: with dogs and killed. Both bears
: were young, healthy males weighing
: about 200 pounds each. The necropsy
: performed later indicated that both
: bears were disease free. Residents
: in the area felt that the same two
: bears were observed with a sow the
: previous summer and that these
: animals had been feeding on garbage
: and handouts.
:
: Both bears were killed after the
: incident. Have fun. No worries.

: If you've ever seen a hiker around
: San
: Gorgonio carrying bear spray, it may
: have been me. Since I typically
: hike alone, I feel I am more likely
: to happen upon a bear so I carry the
: spray.
:
: When I had MY sighting... I had left
: my bearspray at home.
: Go figure.

: I saw my first bear in 30 years of
: hiking the SGW and CW. It was at 3rd
: stream camp in Middle Fork 7/20/12.
: I'm doing SGW last week of August, I
: think I'll get some bear spray. See
: MY bear video at Norm7634 on
: YouTube.

: I've only felt like that when I've
: encountered mountain lions. Bears
: always seem to be calm, kinda easy
: going creatures.
:
: One of the rangers in Yosemite told
: my kids, "You want to stay back
: when you see a bear. But if you
: don't approach them, don't worry,
: they won't come running up and eat
: you. Bears are way too lazy for
: that. They'd rather sneak a
: cheeseburger someone left out than
: actually have to catch something
: live."
:
: I came across a beautiful auburn
: bear with a tan muzzle and ears at
: Wildwood State Park in Yucaipa.
: While trying to get my camera out -
: I was only about 30 yards away, he
: heard the zipper in my pack. He
: turned and saw me, then ran behind a
: big bush. A moment later I saw his
: head slowly rising above the bush -
: he was peeking out to see if that
: scary human was still there. When
: he saw me, he turned and ran off at
: amazing speed.
:
: Kind of ironic, since he was
: probably around 300 lbs, and he's
: got me by over 100 lbs!
:
: Beautiful creatures. I like seeing
: them, but you're right Patrick, it's
: nearly impossible to get the camera
: out before they're gone. Glad you
: had the chance to see one.

: It was more like, "WHEW... its
: running the other way!"
:
: But yeah... it was kind of weird not
: having any barrier between it and I.

: Patrick...of the times I've come
: across bears in the SGW, my first
: thought has always been...."my
: goodness, there's no fence between
: it and me....." did that
: thought cross your mind?

: In the past, I've seen their paw
: prints, and I've seen their poo
: piles... but today I had a close
: encounter with a bear.
: It was only about 60 yards from me.
: It saw me first and took off running
: up a hill which caused me to look in
: that direction.
: It was a little bear.
: Due to lack of traction on the hill,
: it seemed to be running in slow
: motion. But it was still too fast
: for me to get my camera out.
