Look at taking a mountaineer course. There are nice weekend courses offered in Bishop or go hardcore and learn it on a Mt Rainer mountaineering school. Check out RMI or other schools.
Like Hikin Jim said, it's not something you can learn through trial and error. You only get one shot to get it right.

: Well, not that I'm an expert, but the
: first order of business is training.
: Doing a self arrest is a feat of
: athleticism. You typically get one
: shot. "Stick" it
: correctly and you stop safely.
: Misjudge the angle, the timing, or
: your body position, and... Well,
: it's not a good thing. It's not
: like a set of brakes on a car; just
: about anyone can use the brakes on a
: car. A self arrest takes knowledge,
: athleticism, and practice.

: I had a pair of Rei (Raichle)
: leather
: boots and used black diamond contact
: strap-on crampons with them. I now
: use the same crampons with my lowa
: mountaineering boot and have used
: them with trai runners as well.
: Bottom line is strap on will fit
: nearly any shoe or boot.
