Vic,
Canisters will help keep the wildlife from being habituated to human food. Especially bears being they can get into just about anything but a canister.
public safety is like any wild animal fortnately we do not have grizzlys. The Black Bears of the SBM/SGW are not that aggressive from my experience. Most of these Bears want a easy meal easly scarred away. Your more likely to have runins with raccoons than a bear.
I have day hiked Vivian many times just to go and have lunch and never have seen a bear and had a good lunch with a view.
The main thing is to keep a clean camp no food crumbs smellables. if you do you run risk of problems. Have your kitchen and canister away from where you sleep and always keep a eye out when you have your canister open or food out. As I have stated they want a easy meal. yell at them wave your arms around if you see one while eating.
I'm sounding like a broken record I feel...
Anyways I think and know that canisters will be introduced as a RULE for the SGW soon.
