I wouldn't say they aren't good being I have one also. The problem lies when or if a bear does check it out. That all or most of your food will be smashed. That the coffee could be mixed with your oat meal and sugar... there have been a few a few people that have runins with bears and had this problem. I myself feel beter knowing that my coffee will be in the same pack that I put it in... the weight is not that much different. 1lb. if you get the BV450 2Lbs 1 oz. the ursack weight 8ozs and with the aluminmum insert its about 1lb+
So there isn't that much difference.
I would expect that this will be something like what we have in the sierra.

: I agree! The ursack is really just as
: good from what ive seen, and saves
: me about a pound (ish?) off of
: baseweight! PLEASE!

: Hopefully, the bear container
: requirements will include the use of
: Ursacks. Ursacks are lighter and
: pack better than a conventional
: barrel strapped to your back.
: Ursacks are not permitted in parts
: of the Sierra due to overly strict
: regulation IMHO. I am much more
: likely to carry an Ursack than a big
: uncomfortable "can".

: The Bear Vault canisters work very
: well. The BV450 Solo runs 69.95 and
: the BV500 runs 79.95. The BV450 Solo
: weighs 2lbs 1oz has a 4 day capacity
: and the BV500 weights 2lbs 9oz has a
: 7 day capacity.

: What is the biggest? The smallest?
: How much do you need to spend??

: From Halfway Camp CLOSURE thread
: below.
: Seems like most everyone here is in
: favor of a bear canister requirement
: for the SGW. The requirement is
: currently being discussed by local
: Forest Service officials. However,
: the FS system is usually reluctant
: to impose additional requirements
: and restrictions on the public
: without a very strong need and a
: voiced desire by the public. We all
: know there would be a few who
: complain about having to buy or rent
: a canister.
: And instituting such a requirement
: involves a considerable amount of
: time, red tape, and many levels of
: review and approval. Also, FS
: workload is overflowing and
: priorities have to be set. We can
: help them be aware of the public
: desire and set those priorities by
: simply sending a short polite note
: about our desire for a bear canister
: requirement, letter or post card, to
: Forest Supervisor's Office,
: 602 South Tippecanoe Avenue,
: San Bernardino, CA 92408. Mine is on
: it's way.
