Spoke to Gabe Garcia this afternoon and he stated that he is pushing for mandatory canisters for the entire SGW.
I truely hope this goes into effect soon.
This is a small part we as a hole can do for our experience into the outdoors of the San Gorgonio Wilderness.
Canisters can be bought at many outdoor shops. They can also be rented at Mill Creek Rangers Station.
With as many people each year that visit SGW 100,000's + and Vivian Creek Trail being the 10th most used trail in the entire USA. I think making a small rule like this will only help the wilderness.
Use a Canister
Keep a Clean Camp

: ForestHiker,
: I spoke to the Supervisor secretary
: on Monday and was told that we need
: to or I need to talk to the Deputy
: District Ranger Gabe Garcia. So I
: called him on Monday waiting for a
: call back so Today again I left
: another message to him hoping he
: will be able to give some
: information regarding bear canisters
: requirement. Still waiting...
: tomorrow I will call the Supervisor
: and talk to them being they told me
: if gabe isn't able to help they
: would...
: So good start... just hope this
: doesn't fall off and disapear being
: winter is coming...

: From Halfway Camp CLOSURE thread
: below.
: Seems like most everyone here is in
: favor of a bear canister requirement
: for the SGW. The requirement is
: currently being discussed by local
: Forest Service officials. However,
: the FS system is usually reluctant
: to impose additional requirements
: and restrictions on the public
: without a very strong need and a
: voiced desire by the public. We all
: know there would be a few who
: complain about having to buy or rent
: a canister.
: And instituting such a requirement
: involves a considerable amount of
: time, red tape, and many levels of
: review and approval. Also, FS
: workload is overflowing and
: priorities have to be set. We can
: help them be aware of the public
: desire and set those priorities by
: simply sending a short polite note
: about our desire for a bear canister
: requirement, letter or post card, to
: Forest Supervisor's Office,
: 602 South Tippecanoe Avenue,
: San Bernardino, CA 92408. Mine is on
: it's way.
