I wouldn't be worried about the bears on a day hike.
The so-called risk if any is more of your fears than truth. Fact is that bears don't harrass humans its the other way around.
As long as you keep your food watched over while having lunch you will be just fine. Also you'll be lucky if you even see a Bear during the day but if you do make yourself big as possible and make loud noises to scare the bear off works for me and others.
Go and enjoy your hike... be sure to have a map and let someone know where your going.
