Avvy prediction isn't so easy. If you really want to get into it, you have to dig a snow pit and know what to look for in the layers of snow. All that is a bit beyond me although I know it in theory.
A good rule of thumb is: any time there's a big dump of fresh powder, stay away from any chutes or areas where you can see a swath of treeless terrain going up a mountainside.
Avalanches in So Cal are comparitively rare when you think of places like Colorado, but they do happen here. It was either last season or the year before that where we had at least three avvy caused deaths in the So Cal backcountry.
