I bought my first guitar, a flat top Stella from Lyal, and later a Fender. Lyal was a good friend of my cousin Dean Trygstad. He would come out to Dean's farm on Sundays when we were visiting and would usually bring a new fantastic high end Fender with him. Of course cousin Dean had his Gibson flat top, and the Martin that eventually wound up on the cover of Eric Clapton's Unplugged album. Dean sold it after he had a stroke to a dealer, and the dealer somehow sold it to Clapton. At a family reunion, Dean told me that when he saw the picture, "he recognized every scratch on it".
