The InnerLight began in Faulkton SD in 1968 with Mike Stevens and brothers Roy and JD Holdren as core members. They won the local Snow Queen talent contest in November of that year and the state Snow Queen talent contest in January of 1969. The InnerLight played around the east central portion of South Dakota with various members, finally ending in 1971 as a seven piece brass band playing Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears, as well as some innovative originals penned by Mike Stevens.
The band regrouped in 2007 to play at the Faulkton all-school reunion. The show was videotaped by Arnie Benard and, with additional interviews, was made into a full two hour DVD. It is a view into a little known part of South Dakota history.
Mike Stevens passed away November 5, 2011. He was a good friend and a great musician. His voice, his songs, his love for, and his contributions to music will be missed. I would like to submit his name for nomination into the South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
