Hello, South Dakota
All community theatres and Rock fans in South Dakota are welcome to a copy of the director script and the sheet music for the score of RIFF-RAFF GALAXIES. No charge.
Below is some info about the show:
Riff-Raff Galaxies is a musical play. It is a dramatic and whimsical show based on the idea that Rock & Roll may well be the best gift we have to give to the Universe. And, that is what happens on stage: we give our music to the Universe.
For a moment imagine you are in a band of Rock star singer/songwriters. You stand on a stage in a scruffy nightclub in another galaxy. You must define Rock & Roll for an audience which has never before heard our music. A heckler shouts, What the heck is Rock & Roll?. How would you respond? For that is the question
What the heck is Rock & Roll music?
If your town has a core of enthusiastic actors and actresses of mixed ages who want to be Rock star singer/songwriters on your community theatres stage then Riff-Raff Galaxies may be the best chance they will ever have to strut and sing together for your audience. Every player has good lines. Just about every role has a song or two of its own. Any role can be performed by a non-musician.
Riff-Raff Galaxies is more than noise and glitter. The show is full of ideas, fresh ideas. Why has Rock & Roll been the dominant music of the whole world for three generations? Why is Rock & Roll the way the world wants to sing and the way the world wants to dance? Riff-Raff Galaxies explains the roots, the universal appeal, and the musical fate of Rock & Roll!
The opening song, Bloodline, ties Rock music to our deep past. The finale, Let Love Sing, celebrates our giving our music to the Universe and ties us forever to the deep future. One song explains how Rock & Roll came to be created in the heartland of America. One song is about the young rebel. There is a song about the High Plains and a song sung by a would be poet in a parking lot.
Blame the Drummer Man is a tribute to the foundation, the beat, of Rock & Roll. Looking For A Kind Word comes as a surprise in a dark alley in another galaxy. There are drama rich duets. There are songs about tattoos and perfume and roller coaster rides and about the wonder of the night sky. Blastoff is the anthem for our taking Rock to the stars. And, We Are Rock And Roll defines our music for the rest of the Universe.
In daydreams, a huge budget would be fun, but this show can be performed with imagination and bake-sale financing. Because the dialog and the songs are rich with imagery, the stage sets need only suggest the locations. Throughout the director script, a variety of staging alternatives from expensive to dirt cheap are detailed.
This is a stage story for players who still believe more in make-believe than in the mega-budgets of Hollywood and Broadway productions.
If the players in your community theatre are innovative and rambunctious, if they yearn to strike their own mark on their own stage with a new show that tells the story of the music of our times, they would be perfect for Riff-Raff Galaxies! After all, the magic of theatre is in the players
not in the size or the address of the building.
Many of the songs now have sophisticated arrangements. However, all the songs can be performed well by a good hometown Rock band with a keyboard player. Your musicians will enjoy the songs.
For community theatres, an audio CD with computer generated audio of the song arrangements (with no vocal tracks) is available for the asking. When this disc is played through your sound system, your singers can easily try out the songs on your stage.
You may find that Riff-Raff Galaxies will attract a broader spectrum of the folks who live in your town. This should be no surprise as many of the Broadway classics repeated year after year are now three and four generations old. The appeal of the old shows is fading.
As one of the singer/songwriter characters in the play says, There is a fabulous tangle of life to see
and unwind
and set to sound. If your players want to set to sound life in your town, think about performing Riff-Raff Galaxies.
Because I am the sole copyright holder of all my plays and musicals
performance rights are simple, flexible and inexpensive. Among other savings there is no need to rent and return paper scripts and paper sheet music.
Every stage deserves to resound with a brand new musical with fresh dialog, new ideas and new songs!
Thank you.
