First time in the Roller Drome was '61 or '62. Bill Black Combo. As I walked in they were doing Clyde McPhattar's "Lover Please", their singer was sitting on the bench on the side of the stage, smoking I think, -- no lights, no nothin'. After the instrumental riff he jumped up and was probably one of the ten best singers I ever heard. The Drome was a great place for music because you could get up real close with with that kick out stage. Bill Black Combo for the most part bore little resemblance to their records. They were a kick-ass Memphis band. I think Bill was playing bass, but he got sick and quit soon after-- this from memory, I might be wrong. I'd love to see the Roller Drome in the HOF.
