Horatio's in Brookings must be mentioned as a nominee, not just as a venue for the best regional bands at that time (early 60's-mid 70') but also for the super house bands that emerged from there. The Talismen, The Military Pickle, the North Wall, and The Ride, just to name a few that I can remember. IMHO the Ride should get some love from the HOF. They packed them in every Wed. nite. Jimmy Thomas booked them for other venues, they were well received in eastern S.D., western Minn., and nw Iowa, on the weekends during the school year and all summer. 1967 thru 1973 were the years they were going strong. The band was built around their vocalist Doug Lund from Volga (no not that Doug Lund). Bob Kinney (r.i.p,) played lead, Billy Williams bass and vocals, Gordy Johnson keyboards (awesome) and Terry Rathbun drums. Most of these guys were in h.s. and some moved on to college out of state. Greg Shelden was added as lead guitar and vocals, Todd Finney on keyboards and Jimmy Wright on drums and vocals. This line-up along with Mike Rieger stayed together until 72 or 73. They broke up after a tour of hotel and club venues throughout upper midwest and eastern states. Some of these guys still do music. They've had reunions and sounded great.
