I am here in Sioux Falls, my old hometown for this years SD Rock Hall of Fame induction bash. Here are a few personal observations about the Class of 2011:
+ KIMM Radio, Rapid City - Back in the early and mid 1960s, there wasn't much rock radio in Sioux Falls. But Rapid had the coolest station - KIMM 1150 AM.
KIMM went on the air in 1961 and was owned by Gene Taylor. Though it only broadcast during day-time hours, KIMM rocked with best music of the era. (There was no station like KIMM in Sioux Falls until 1966 when KISD went rock.)
KIMM had terrific air personalities: Chuck Buell, Brian Cummings, Mark Young, John Soderquist. KIMM was "the place" to promote bands in the Black Hills. When you got to the Missouri River going west you could get the signal.
+ Boss Brian Cummings -- A huge influence on me when I worked at KISD back in the late 60s. Brian landed in LA in the early 70s and became of the most successful voice actors in the world. He trained with Mel Blanc. You've heard Brian's voice on cartoons, movie trailers, commercials -- plus he was the voice of Richard Nixon in the movie "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Brian was a close friend of Mark Craney's in LA.
+ The Torres -- One of the best bands ever in SD. They were the coolest thing Huron ever produced.
+ The X-Men -- Intensely creative and one of the first bands I knew that did original tunes. Mike Connor, Gary Johnson and John Everist are still rocking today.
+ Mark Craney -- Amazing drummer and totally nice guy who went on the play with Tommy Bolin, Jethro Tull, Gino Vanelli and many, many others. Mark passed away a few years ago from complications of diabetes. Chateaux will give a tribute Saturday night.
There's lots of other great music that will be celebrated on Saturday. Thanks the SD Rock Hall organizers. Rock on. Ken.
