I love what you guys are doing. Doug you entertained my parents (Mom a Dells girl chasing Denny Hegg and My Mitchell Dad seeing tours at the Corn Palace) many nights as they danced at the Macomba, the top of the Holiday Inn downtown, the Dells Pavilion, the Japanese Gardens in Flandreau.
As for me I grew up going to the Showboat at Lake Benton and the Hatfield Ballroom and Dakota Territories the later the Pomp Room.
I'd love to see some of the early bands from my generation get some recognition as well as the pioneers (and they certainly do deserve the slots they are getting!!!)
The immensely talented Red Willow band along with Nickel Bag of Soul and the Mob of the 70's passed the torch to two amazing Sioux Falls area bands leading the way in Rock and Roll in the upper plains.
Aaron Baron and Wakefield were spoken of in almost hushed tones in high school hallways they were so iconic in the early 80's. They sold out everywhere they played, kids came from all over just for a chance to hear them and experience their professional grade live shows.
Later in the 80's and early 90's it wasthe Litterer band from Iowa and Zwarte from Dell Rapids leading the way. The Zwart boys could really use a reunion right now to get over their petty fighting too!!!
As we get into the modern era South Dakota has been blessed with so many great bands harkening back to the era of Gemini 6, the Pilgrims, Myron Lee, etc. with Janitor Bob and the Armchair Cowboys, Kory and the Fireflies and Indigenous all super talented musicians doing original rock and all receiving national air play.
South Dakota has truly been blessed. Thank you to all the board members for recognizing the huge talent this state has produced!
