Anyone comparing regular seasons to a tournament is clueless. MLB can blind draw because every game of the season is guaranteed...( Lucky for the Yankees and Sox who are already 0-3)
Tournaments are meant to have weaker matchups first leading to the best of the best at the end. See March Madness
You don't see Nadal and Federer facing off in the first round of a tennis tournament.
