What would you guess the ratio of "training" vs. "Testing" should be assuming that a "test" is pushing a dog to its limit.
Personally, I think a dog should be tested only a few times.
1. When selecting your prospect (however you evaluate your candidate),
2. At a trail, or...
3. to prove to yourself you are satisfied with your work (finished or not).
Everything else IMO should be training....building. Now, I will be the first to admit as a breeder I haven't followed this "belief" completely, as I have "proven" dogs to others that want to know what potential they are buying...but I do believe the above guidelines creates the best dogs.
Also, I think the more very hard stressful tests (this may or may not include training but testing as that would depend upon how one trains) a dog has, the less social it will eventually become. Maybe not always, but generally speaking. For some dogs that are not expected to be social, that may be acceptable.
