I love useing the spring pole and have not found it to be negitive in any way. You can still teach them to bite solid if you only let them work it when they have a good bite. If they have a crap bite "out" them off and only let them work it when they have a solid bite. If you set it to where their legs can touch the ground you do develop their hind end and back muscles. Ours is set a little high but can be adjusted. Many of my dogs only want to hang (my Pit Bull Bama mostly). Doesn't matter if the rope is on the ground she will still leap and hang off of the ground.
