I'll give you my two cents, however there certainly are more qualified folks that will probably chime in. I train basic obedience here in Southern California.

"How long do you wait for your dog/puppy to find his place before beginning formal training sessions and why?"
I start with a pup as soon as posible-8-10 weeks. The sooner i can get the basic OB instilled in the pup, the easier they seem to learn.
The "finding it's place" I'm not exactly sure what your saying but if it's pack structure your talking about-they learn their place not find it.
"Pros and cons to starting to early or too late?"
I'm admittedly a novice trainer. So, in my limited experience. I can't think of a negative to starting too early with training and starting late means you have to do more corrections for bad behaviors that are engrained into the dog.
"Can this effect how independent a dog is as a mature adult?"
I would say absolutely. A dog that has been trained early knows that it's never been allowed to do or act in certain behaviors. A dog thats say never trained until adulthood knew a different life before and has the temptation to revert to the former behavior pattern.
Also, their will always be the dogs that don't fit into the answers given. In fact i think it was yesterday i read something about the old dogmen refering to some dogs as being "mindfull" or rather not being mindfull of their master. They culled them.
I hope i've helped.
