Posted by Harriet on 10/16/2002, 7:37 pm The next hard part is deciding you'll do whatever it takes to get and STAY sober. It can never be cured, only controlled by not drinking.
The hardest part for any alcoholic is to recognize that you ARE one. Most alcholics hang out with others like themselves, so life "seems" pretty normal. I had no clue that I even had a "little problem" until I was about 45, and even then I just thought to myself, "If I keep doing this, I'm going to BECOME an alcoholic." Even the first time I attended an AA meeting was to get someone else to go, who I thought had a "real" problem. I actually wondered to myself if they'd ask me to leave because I wasn't a REAL alcoholic. LMAO!! They didn't ask me to leave, and it didn't take me long to see that I was one also.
