Bobby Sull,
The ball core and temperature have an absolute corollary. Why do you think punch hitters like me love hitting when it's 60 degrees or under? Cuz the ball flies! When it's 75 or 80 degrees, I'm done! Cooch and his oven mitt typing skills are right on: If you use a certain core ball for under 70 degrees and a higher core ball over 70, the balls will come off the bat in a more consistent manner.
I still think my idea of putting a bat rack behind home plate and letting anyone use anybody's bat is the best idea, so if someone is suspected of using an altered bat, then guys from the other team can use it too. But in the meantime, Cooch's idea of different cores for different conditions makes a lot of sense.
