I was short of time, so I thought I would shortcut lathering with the Oliveology gel. It's a semi-liquid from a bottle and it is quite protective. It also made touching up easy. It feels "messier" than soap-based lather, however, so I'm not sure how I feel about it. Next time I'm in this position, I might try Zach's suggestion of applying Dr Bronner's liquid soap without lathering it.
