Well, thanks for all the replies gentlemen. I've a few cheap foils, and indeed they work well on a freshly cleansed then dried face.
That said, I remember their working better; of course I knew they take time, but in my memories they shaved closer - maybe a higher-end model, allowing the foil to be pressed harder against the skin - but then I'd likely be getting too-close a shave.
As it stands a cheap foil gives me results akin to my customary 2-pass WTG-XTG shave - but with a good deal more effort.
I get I'll just settle for no-ATG shaves.
