I cork a new blade just to align the edge and wipe away any remaining coating or residue along the cutting edge. It DOES help, and it's not "bad" for the blade edge if done properly. I barely cut into the cork at all (maybe a couple of millimeters), and just draw the blade through...you don't have to saw through it or anything, just a nice gentle couple of passes on each edge, and you're good to go. Also works nicely for an older blade to freshen the edge.
