With cream + badger I too tend to start not on my face, because the water ratio for a badger is so finicky I want to get the initial mix right, so I'll add water to a dry badger till it's right, about 10-15 seconds and usually in my palm because all my bowls are full of soap.
With the cream + boar, I just load it and go.
