83 XJ750 oil problems

I bought a XJ750 last year and the kid thought it had an oil leak. I do an oil change and drained over about 8 quarts from the thing. What damage will this have caused to the engine. The spark plugs are continuously oily. Did so much oil bust the piston rings or an oil leak in some other area of the bike? Or (Im hoping) will the excess oil burn out over time? any help would be great, thanks
