xj650 special ( maxim ) japanese import

Hi can anyone help with a running problem i have, when the bike is stationery you can rev the engine cleanly but when out on the road it slightly miss fires on what seems to be one cyclinder but when you open the throttle to go faster it clears has anyone any ideas. could it be to do with the vacume pipe from the the petrol tap also what are the float hights on the xj650 the haynes manual says 17.5ml but it will not run at that setting ive had to re set back to around 10ml float hight setting.
