ignition timing yamaha virago 1100

I recently started having problems starting my 96 virago. When you try to start it, it backfires and does not sound like it is hitting when you crank it. I did roll start it a couple of times and was curious if this upset the timing or if I have a different problem. Also, if it is the timing how do you set the timing on this particular bike? Thanks! Craig
